Spiritual Manipulation

The following incidents were brought to my attention recently.

One believer went to Eric and Debby Berry about sin in their life that had been observed on several occasions.  This believer was rebuffed, and some other believers were present.  Debby and Eric were furious, and took the first believer aside, and related the story of Noah's sons to this person.  "Love covers sin.  In the Old Testament when Noah's son did not cover his sin, God cursed him.  You should be quiet and be careful." was Debby's admonishment.

Over the course of the past year, it became obvious to some close to Debby and Eric that their behavior was  getting more and more erratic.  Debby began to vocalize fears that there were those trying to 'steal her power'.  She said these people were the Absalom to her King David and that Absalom was killed for his actions.  One of those accused told me "She is no King David, and I have no desire for anything she has, but I was accused outright anyway."

Background Information On Eric And Debby Berry

Between Eric and Debby, there are 8 marriages, no long term friends*, no roots of any sort, and none of their children in communication with them.   They do not believe in counseling or for asking others to pray for them, and without authority figures who know them well, these elements combined make for little hope or accountability for change.

*They are very good at hand-picking a few 'favourite' people to give money and material items to, and go to lunch with regularly, so that they can say they have ‘close friends’ but these people do not know the true situation, and are often manipulated by the gifts and ‘generosity’.   Behind closed doors, these people are often discussed and criticized, and personal information is not kept private, even in a 'counseling' scenario.

60 Minutes And The Berrys In Your Church

Eric and Debby were featured on 60 Minutes about 6 years ago (found in the following video at around 7:30):

The FBI did not officially charge them, and the investigation has not been officially closed either.  Several people in the past 1-4 years have continued to lose large amounts of money to Eric and Debby Berry.  These 'investments' are a good way to lose your life savings.  It did not stop after 60 Minutes and it still hasn't stopped.

For whatever reason, churches and Christians are a frequent target of the Berrys.  This makes Debby's frequent invitation into the pulpit dangerous, and the fact that they have been members at four churches in the past four years is also alarming.  How many people are they going to try to win over and then scam in the future if the truth is not shared?

Debby and Eric are smart and very gifted at the 'long con'.  So of course you see a friendly couple who will buy you dinner, offer to send your child to college or buy you a new wardrobe.  But what you do not see is insidious.  It is a well thought out plan to take what they can get, when they can get it once they have won your confidence.

UPDATE:  CBS has removed the video from Youtube.  You can find it on their website here

If you lie down with dogs, you will get up with fleas.

Forgoing traditional employment for most of their adult lives, Eric and Debby have gotten involved in many illegal and unethical business practices.  How they have evaded prosecution thus far is a mystery to many who have lost money to them.  But they have not escaped notice- they were profiled on 60 Minutes and many of their business partners from the past 5-10 years are in serious legal trouble- a quick Google search of the following business partners return interesting results:

  • Ray Wright (aka Michael Gee, Michael Wright and Wright Leasing)
  • Ray White
  • Roy Higgs
  • Sloan DuPont
  • David Rodli
  • Monte Swanzy
  • Alan D’Arcy (Google his name with the words scam or arrest following)

More thorough searches of Eric and Debby Berry bring many complaints about their activities- many people have lost money to them.  Before investing with either of them, contact the SEC or the FBI and get someone you trust with a financial background and a track record of profits to look over what has been proposed to you.

Debby was fired from LFP, she did not quit.

Part of Debby's testimony is that she quit LFP (Larry Flynt Publications) once she got saved.  This is not true and it is well documented that she was fired for theft and misrepresentation of the company.  Although this was a long time ago, it is a huge part of the testimony she gives almost every time she speaks- so the sin and deception continues to this day.

Beware of Debby Berry

Debby Berry (Deborah Kaye Eden Berry) is not who she says she is.  There is a public face and then the face that many know behind closed doors.  She does not belong in the pulpit, counseling people or handling anyone's money.  Please use caution and the leading of the Lord before allowing her into your circle.  Do your due diligence.
